Friday 21st August 1953 - 3GL scored an Australian exclusive when the Sound barrier was broken for the first time in Australia. |
| It happened that Bill Scott, pilot of the record breaking jet, tuned his aircraft's radio compass to 3GL, thus setting up a crude two radio system so the he and commentator Bill, Ackfield could talk to each other - with the whole of 3GL's audience listening in. |
| Bill Ackfield (a RAAF pilot himself) knew pilot Bill Scott and the two exchanged banter as Scott dived his Saber jet from 42000 feet to exceed Mach 1 for the first time in Australia |
| A recording of this event is available from a number of sources. You can down load the 9 minute soundtrack in mp3 format by RIGHT clicking here and saving to disc - but be warned it is very large (about 8mb) and may take a long time to download. |
