Friday 21st August 1953 -  3GL scored an Australian exclusive when the Sound barrier was broken for the first time in Australia.

It happened that Bill Scott, pilot of the record breaking jet, tuned his aircraft's radio compass to 3GL, thus setting up a crude two radio system so the he and commentator Bill, Ackfield could  talk to each other - with the whole of 3GL's audience listening in.
Bill Ackfield  (a RAAF pilot himself) knew pilot Bill Scott and the two exchanged banter as Scott dived his Saber jet from 42000 feet to exceed Mach 1 for the first time in Australia
A recording of this event is available from a number of sources. You can down load the 9 minute soundtrack in mp3 format by RIGHT clicking here and saving to disc - but be warned it is very large (about 8mb) and may take a long time to download.
